Black Businesses of U Street
Journey through one of Washington, D.C.’s most historical and unique neighborhoods on a guided walking tour led by local author and journalist Briana Thomas. With the use of community storytelling and engaging visuals, we will stroll through the Greater U Street area once known as Black Broadway. Before the 21st century’s chain coffee shops and luxury high-rises, there was Black Broadway. It was the roaring 20s and the U Street corridor was home to more than three hundred Black-owned businesses. During this experience you will visit the area’s oldest landmarks, as we spotlight the Black-owned businesses from the neighborhood’s golden past. Discover some of the corridor’s most popular shops like, the nationally acclaimed restaurant, Ben’s Chili Bowl, and D.C.’s first Black financial institution, Industrial Bank. Also, keep an eye out for some hidden gems along the way!
